The Atomium is a monument built for Expo '58, the 1958 Brussels World's Fair. Designed by André Waterkeyn, it is 102-metre (335-feet) tall, with nine steel spheres connected so that the whole forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Tubes which connect the spheres along the 12 edges of the cube and all eight vertices to the centre enclose escalators connecting the spheres which contain exhibit halls and other public spaces. The top sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels. Each sphere is 18 metres in diameter. Three spheres are currently (2008) closed to the visitors, others are easily reachable with escalator. The vertical vertex contains lift which has been very fast and advanced at the time of building (the speed is 5 m/s). One of the original ideas for Expo '58 was to build an upside-down version of the Eiffel tower; however, Waterkeyn felt that an atomic structure would be more symbolic of the era.[citation needed] The monument was originally planned to remain standing only six months. However, it soon became a symbol not only of the World's Fair, but of modern architecture and Brussels. Son acier de construction pèse 2 400 tonnes. Il est devenu, au même titre que le Manneken Pis et la Grand-Place, le symbole de la capitale de la Belgique. Il se compose d'une charpente d'acier portant neuf sphères reliées entre elles et habillées d'aluminium. Les sphères ont un diamètre de 18 mètres et pèsent chacune environ 250 tonnes. Symboliquement, l'Atomium incarne l'audace d'une époque qui a voulu confronter le destin de l'Humanité avec les découvertes scientifiques. La construction de l'Atomium fut une prouesse technique. Sur les neuf boules, six sont rendues accessibles au public, chacune comportant deux étages principaux et un plancher inférieur réservé au service. Le Tube central contient l'ascenseur le plus rapide de l'époque (5 m/s), il permet à 22 personnes d'accéder au sommet en 23 secondes. Les escaliers mécaniques installés dans les tubes obliques, comptent parmi les plus longs d'Europe. Le plus grand mesure 35 m de long. L'Atomium, conçu pour durer six mois, n'était pas destiné à survivre à l'Exposition internationale de 1958. Mais sa popularité et son succès en ont fait un élément majeur du paysage bruxellois. Sa destruction fut donc reportée d'année en année jusqu'à être abandonnée. Het betreft een stalen constructie die bestaat uit negen bollen met elk een diameter van 18 meter, die samen de kubisch ruimtelijk gecentreerde kristalstructuur van ijzer uitbeelden, 165 miljard maal vergroot. Het gebouw, dat ontworpen is door architect André Waterkeyn, is bekleed met roestvrij staal (oorspronkelijk aluminium). De aluminium constructie woog destijds in lege staat 2500 ton. De bovenste bol van het Atomium werd naar zijn ontwerper André Waterkeyn genoemd na diens dood in 2005. Het Atomium staat voor de Wereldtentoonstelling in Brussel in 1958, de zogenaamde Expo '58, als symbool voor het metaal "staal" dat sterk in ontwikkeling was, en een belangrijke rol speelde in de optimistische kijk op ontwikkeling in de jaren vijftig. Gek genoeg werd er bij de bouw besloten dat de bollen niet van staal, maar van aluminium gemaakt moesten worden. Dit materiaal was ook een materiaal in opkomst. Het heeft echter niet de kubisch ruimtelijk gecentreerde, maar de kubisch vlakgecentreerde structuur. Het is niet precies bekend waarom dit besluit genomen werd, maar het zal ermee te maken gehad hebben dat aluminium op dat ogenblik aanmerkelijk beter bestand was tegen corrosie dan staal. Het gebouw zou volgens plan niet langer dan zes maanden blijven staan. Aan het eind van de wereldtentoonstelling werd echter besloten om het gebouw, dat enorm populair en bekend was geworden, toch maar te laten staan.
